March 20th Texas fly fishing Report 2025

Its been a great month with Spring kicking off hard across the state and just about all the fresh water fish are happy and coming up shallow to spawn or eat. Its hard to beat this time of year so make sure your getting out and enjoying the weather plus epic fly fishing.

For Houston area we have seen the white bass, yellow bass and crappie spawn peak and pretty much end but you can still find scattered fish and piled up crappie here and there. It was an interesting run this year but great at times. The largemouth bass spawn is full on with paired up fish scattered all over expect it to peak soon if it hasnt already. The topwater shad action has been really good the last week and really kicked of our topwater season. Look for more frog action to pick up as well as other terrestrials. Dont be scared to slow strip a streamer around though the shallows have been loaded with fish and some big fat heathly ones at that! Bowfin spawn has happened and weve been enjoying the show. Right now its all about finding shallow cruising females and if you can make the shot theyll almost definitely eat. Look for this action to pick up as we warm up. Carp are starting to spawn making for the best time of year to find a big one shallow. While most are just thinking about spawning if you keep at it youll find some big girls willing to bite. Dont focus on the main spawning action but the slow cruisers off to the side. Gar action has also turned on with spotted gar spawning on the lakes and alligator gar starting to bite. As long as flows stay low were in for a awesome Alligator gar season. Spent a couple days on them the last week and connected to some big fish! Redear sunfish are starting to show up shallow and the other species wont be far behind. If youre into light fly rods and panfish youre about to be in heaven. Get that box of tiny boogle bugs out and lets go.

DFW/North central Texas Things are kicking off here too even though water temps are a little cooler. But that means all this action weve had in Houston is coming here in the next week or two, so were in for some awesome fly fishing! The white bass and crappie spawn is in full swing here with big females still being caught and days where were losing count of caught fish. Look for this action to continue but not for to much longer. So get out there or call me asap! Largemouth bass are in prespawn with males making beds depending on water temps and your exact location. Expect this to turn into full blown spawning action over the next week or two. Topwater action has been slow but not every day and streamer action has been really good most days especially on the Brazos river, the lakes are just getting warm enough but were starting to catch more numbers. Pickerel have been loving it and crushing topwater and fast stripped streamers on lake they exist. Carp have been sipping elm tree seeds especially on these windy days making for some unique dry fly action and are shallow if you know where to look. Expect this to pick up as we warm up and know flats season on the lakes is kicking off! Bowfin has in spawning mode making for some great action if you can find them in the grass theyre hiding in. Expect males to be bedding up and females to be out on the prowl. Hopefully this get ya excited and out there fly fishing the great state of Texas. We have so much water and and incredibly diverse fishery for all to enjoy!
