February 20th Texas fly fishing Report and Forecast

We had an awesome warm up that went over a week and got on some prespawn Largemouth bass action and some early bird Whitebass and Crappie action. Down south in the greater North Houston waters Whitebass, Crappie and Yellow bass got pretty fired up and even with cold snap were in currently youll still have success find em. Flows are up this week though on the whole system and were anticipating the drop and next weeks warm up to get things back on track. Largemouth bass are mostly still deeper near spawning areas but males are starting to make beds and things will really get going this next month up shallow.

North Texas(DFW) is a little colder and even during the warm up we werent slaying big numbers but we were slaying. The whitebass and crappie were starting to push up shallow but mostly males with the occasional female and tons of spotted bass in the mix with the occasional freshwater drum, largemouth bass and channel catfish. This next push of water and warmer temps should get really good. Largemouth were biting ok, definitely a little grindy in the river but some chunky fish. As for the lakes you just have to find an offshore school and get em to play. Prespawn staging is starting but not a ton of action shallow unless your on a pickerel lake. The chain pickerel dont mind the cooler weather as much.

Things are about to kick off though and its time to start fishing more if you ever slowed down. Look for Largemouth bass to get shallow over the next few weeks and maybe even some topwater action kicking off if spring will take hold. Whitebass/Crappie/Yellowbass will being going full spawn and peaking in March so if your looking to do some catching dont sleep in. Bowfin are already pushing up shallow and males are colored up making for some different sightfishing on swampy lake flats. While its the only time of year to catch colored up males its also a great time to stick large female bed hopping and laying eggs(females do no nesting). But sight fishing is all warm months if you cant swing a spring trip. Alligator Gar are catchable this time of year if you want to grind or can pick a hot day but by April they should start playing ball better if theyre not spawning to hard. Carp are catchable all year but still mostly focusing on shallow rivers and creeks in this cold weather but March youll start to get lake flats action especially if we start really warming up.

Its also great camping weather now through May, if you want to do something different and adventurous i have a trip for you. Get a group together for an over nighter or a four day 3 nights(or more) or ride solo and catch all the fish yourself. Paddle and tent camp river side on some pristine hard to reach less fished waters, eat like a king and catch big Texas sized Largemouth Bass on a fly rod. Mostly doing this on the Brazos river but have several options across the state. Holler for more information!

Winter is trying to hang on but some of the best fly fishing action of the year is about to kick off. Come get in on the action i have a Texas fly fishing adventure for ya!
