Winter weather has taken over but you can bet were still fishing. This time of year can be tough on the cold days but super good on warmer evenings. Pay attention to water temps and be safe out there.
The Brazos continues to produce solid largemouth and spotted bass with the warmer part of the day being best on streamers. The occasionally white bass and striper have been making appearances and fishing low and slow has been producing some nice freshwater drum. Trout are also stocked at the dam and they love the cold weather, making for a great cold day alternative. This weather has also been making for great multi day over night floats if your interested in an adventure now until early summer is the time.
With the turn of the weather the pickerel fishing has also turned on. Working weed lines, logs and pockets in the shallow grass on the warmer days has been super effective with some super fast and ferocious eats. Again on the colder days that mid day to early evenin bite can be key.
A look forward now at the upcoming Houston area White bass run and. January can be hit and miss and its all about water temps. If winter sticks around itll be slow except for a few windows but if we heat up to spring temps with low enough flows itll turn on and youll want to be there. February typically starts getting really good with more and more warm weather windows, just watch out for to much rain or a lingering winter. While the run can peak in late Feb, early to mid March is usually really good if not when the peak is happening. Yellow bass start to be almost annoying and day savers this time of year and more and more spotted bass join in on the action. If you havnt got in on the run by April youve probably missed the action but that doesnt mean the creeks arent full with lingering whites, yellows or crappie and the spotted bass and largemouth are starting to spawn. Watch for water temperatures between 54 degrees and 65 degrees(perfect temps 62ish). If its colder low and slow will be the name of the game, if its warmer a fast retrieve but much over 67 degrees and it seems they start heading deeper. As for flows your other key component it varies creek to creek river to river but typically lower and clearing is best. Doesnt mean chocolate milk water wont produce though just avoid anything that looks dangerous. I look forward to seeing yall out there and am officially starting bookings for this coming season.
